The Lockheed Martin F-35 program faces ongoing challenges with reliability, according to the latest report from the US Department of Defense’s Director of Operational Test and Evaluation. The report highlighted issues both during testing and in active service, indicating a concerning trend in the aircraft’s performance.
Released in January 2025, the report outlined the F-35 program’s struggles, particularly with software and hardware problems. One significant setback mentioned was the delay in deploying operational F-35s with the Technical Refresh-3 (TR-3) standard, which includes crucial updates like a new central processor and software load.
Specifically, the report pointed out that the software intended for TR-3 was supposed to improve upon the current F-35 operational standard, TR-2. However, testing of the TR-2 software load, designated 30R08, was halted in February 2024 due to poor software stability and the discovery of critical deficiencies.
These delays have had a cascading effect on the F-35 program, with the implementation of the 30R08 software now two years behind schedule, missing its planned rollout date in March 2023. The report raised concerns about the integration and regression testing of the software, noting that several capabilities that worked in previous versions were not functioning properly.
