Customs officers at Auckland International Airport recently made significant drug seizures, totaling over 52kg of methamphetamine and cocaine in two separate incidents. The first seizure involved approximately 50kg of methamphetamine concealed in unaccompanied bags on a flight from San Francisco. These bags were discovered during routine checks by vigilant Customs officers.
In the second incident, 2kg of cocaine was found hidden in the lining of a passenger’s suitcases. The individual, a 24-year-old foreign national arriving from Santiago, Chile, was charged with drug importation and possession for supply. The combined street value of the seized drugs amounted to nearly $20 million, posing a substantial risk to New Zealand.
This was not an isolated occurrence, as it followed a similar incident just days prior. In that instance, over 25kg of illicit drugs, including methamphetamine and cocaine, were discovered in unaccompanied bags arriving from Honolulu. Additionally, 1.9kg of methamphetamine was found in the lining of a checked-in suitcase from a traveler arriving from Sydney.
These recent seizures brought the total amount of drugs intercepted at the airport to approximately 78kg within a week, underscoring the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling. Customs officials emphasized the importance of constant vigilance and collaboration within the aviation sector to combat drug trafficking effectively.
Ben Wells, acting Customs Auckland Airport manager, highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to prevent illicit drugs from entering New Zealand and to deter criminal activities linked to drug trafficking. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior to Customs officials or utilize anonymous hotlines for reporting criminal activities.
