Visy and seafood producer Tassal have collaborated to introduce new recyclable cardboard boxes for prawns, replacing the conventional expanded polystyrene (EPS) containers. These boxes, locally manufactured at Visy’s Carole Park site in Queensland, contain up to 74% recycled material.
Traditionally, expanded polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam, has been the go-to material for transporting prawns. However, due to its limited recyclability and environmental impact, the industry sought more sustainable alternatives. Approximately 100,000 EPS boxes are used annually to deliver prawns to various retailers, seafood markets, and wholesalers.
Adrian Dalgleish, Visy’s executive general manager for Fibre Packaging, highlighted that the new cardboard box design fulfills both sustainability and food safety criteria. He underlined the significance of local manufacturing, emphasizing the retention of manufacturing jobs in Australia by producing recyclable cardboard boxes domestically.
Libby Williams, Tassal’s general manager of Marketing and Innovation, expressed how this initiative aligns with the company’s sustainability objectives. The 10kg cardboard prawn box developed in partnership with Visy not only supports environmental goals but also ensures product freshness and quality for consumers.
