Red Deer has made a significant move by transitioning its transit fare assistance program from a pilot initiative to a permanent offering. Originally supported by the Government of Alberta, this program enables riders to purchase monthly passes at a discounted rate of up to 55%. Following approval during the 2025 budget discussions, the program is set to continue indefinitely, with a renewal deadline for eligible applicants on May 31, 2025. Annual renewal will be necessary for continued participation.
To qualify for the reduced fare, individuals must meet specific criteria, such as receiving Assured Income for Severely Handicapped (AISH), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), or Alberta Income Supports. Additionally, eligibility extends to current tenants in the Red Deer Housing Authority Program, those meeting the Low Income Cut Off requirements, and individuals approved for The City of Red Deer’s Recreation Fee Assistance Program.
Jeremy Bouw, the Transit & Fleet Manager, expressed satisfaction with the program’s outcomes, noting that there has been no significant decline in regular pass sales. This indicates that individuals previously unable to access transit services now have the opportunity to purchase monthly passes. Bouw emphasized that the program aligns with Red Deer Transit’s core objectives of affordability, rider safety, efficient community mobility, and environmental sustainability. The program has already garnered over 2,200 approved riders since its inception in late 2023, with 75% opting for the $34 monthly pass.
As Red Deer continues to prioritize accessible transportation options, the Transit Fare Assistance Program plays a crucial role in facilitating mobility for a broader segment of the population. By providing financial support to those in need, the program contributes to a more inclusive and equitable transit system. Bouw expressed optimism about the program’s ongoing success and its positive impact on the community.

This evolution reflects a broader trend in transportation services, where municipalities are increasingly focusing on initiatives that promote inclusivity and affordability in public transit systems.
