Narrabri Airport Unveils Ambitious Masterplan for Future Development

The future of Narrabri Airport is poised for transformation as the Narrabri Shire Council unveils an ambitious masterplan. The plan, now open for public review, outlines short, medium, and long-term development prospects for the airport. Among the proposed enhancements is a new terminal designed to meet code four standards, akin to Tamworth Airport, featuring expanded check-in counters, passenger screening facilities, a spacious departures lounge, and more.

The estimated cost for this terminal and other upgrades could exceed $100 million, with considerations for runway improvements and other components. However, Mayor Darrell Tiemens emphasized that the masterplan does not obligate immediate substantial investments. Instead, it aims to lay the groundwork for future developments and funding opportunities, ensuring readiness for potential grants in the coming years.

Finance director Ted Harrington echoed this sentiment, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the plan in addressing security and passenger requirements. The proposed upgrades are adaptable based on the evolving needs of the shire, with short-term goals including a new terminal building, expanded parking facilities, and modifications to the internal road network.

Medium-term prospects encompass further enhancements like an aviation hangar precinct and a new taxiway, while long-term visions involve significant runway upgrades and realignment of airport infrastructure. The plan’s scalability allows for phased implementation based on feedback and prioritization from the community.

Interim general manager Eloise Chaplain clarified that the masterplan serves as a strategic framework rather than an immediate blueprint for a $100 million overhaul. It aims to envision potential developments while tailoring them to suit the shire’s specific requirements. The goal is to engage the public in shaping the airport’s future and ensure alignment with broader community needs and growth projections.
