Liaoning Port Group has launched its “durian express” shipping service, marking a significant development for northern Chinese ports’ seaborne durian imports. The initiative includes the construction of the Dalian Northeast Asia Fruit Transit Center, aimed at providing a faster and more cost-effective maritime route for tropical fruits from Southeast Asia to reach markets in Northeast and North China.
The new service is set to reduce transit time to between six and eight days, with the Dalian Container Terminal Co.’s general manager, Li Xiaoguang, highlighting the benefits of this high-speed channel for fresh durians. The transit center, once completed, is expected to handle an annual volume of around 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of durians from Southeast Asia, further streamlining the import process.
Efficiency is a key focus, as Dalian Customs has introduced streamlined procedures to expedite clearance for fresh durians, significantly cutting down clearance times to between one and two days. This move is crucial in minimizing spoilage rates and ensuring the freshness of the imported fruits.
Liaoning Port Group has already made strides in cold chain logistics, boasting the largest cold chain logistics park in a Chinese coastal port – the Dayaowan Cold Chain Logistics Park. With a substantial storage capacity of 400,000 metric tons, the park plays a pivotal role in handling refrigerated containers, with cold chain cargo exceeding 2 million tons annually.
Notably, Dalian Port, under the Liaoning Port Group, serves as the nation’s second-largest banana import hub, processing over 50,000 TEUs of bananas annually. This accounts for more than 30 percent of the national market share, underscoring the port’s significance in fruit imports.
Liu Bin, general manager of Liaoning Port Group, envisions the Dalian initiative as a stepping stone for expanding the “fruit express” shipping network. The group aims to accelerate the completion of the transit center and establish a comprehensive industrial chain ecosystem focusing on fruit imports, encompassing ripening, processing, packaging, and distribution.
As the project unfolds, experts anticipate a positive impact on the fruit import industry, with the potential to revolutionize the transportation of perishable goods and enhance trade relations between Southeast Asia and China. The “durian express” service is poised to streamline supply chains, reduce costs, and ensure the timely delivery of fresh produce to regional markets, catering to the growing demand for tropical fruits in northern China.
With a strategic focus on enhancing logistics infrastructure and optimizing trade routes, Liaoning Port Group’s foray into express shipping signifies a significant milestone in the evolution of maritime trade in the region. The establishment of the Dalian Northeast Asia Fruit Transit Center is poised to bolster economic ties, foster innovation in supply chain management, and elevate the efficiency of fruit imports, setting a new benchmark for port operations in northern China.
