iGA Istanbul Airport has made significant strides in advancing sustainability by reducing emissions and setting ambitious renewable energy targets. In its 2024 Sustainability Report, the airport revealed a 10.5% decrease in emissions compared to projections, showcasing its commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
The report, prepared using Double Materiality analysis, emphasized the airport’s strategy of integrating sustainability into its operations. In 2024, greenhouse gas emissions were cut by 1.4% from the previous year and exceeded forecasts by 10.5%. Additionally, iGA raised its renewable energy target for 2030 from 50% to an impressive 90%.
A key component of this sustainability effort is the Eskişehir Solar Power Plant, a significant investment expected to cover the airport’s electricity needs entirely through solar energy upon completion in late 2025. This initiative positions iGA Istanbul Airport as a leader in sustainable aviation practices globally.
To enhance climate resilience, iGA is collaborating with TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Centre on the Istanbul Airport Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan. This plan involves regional simulations to assess risks and develop long-term strategies to mitigate the airport’s environmental impact.
CEO Selahattin Bilgen views the Sustainability Report as a platform for sharing insights and areas for improvement. He highlighted iGA’s commitment to sustainable aviation, citing the signing of the “Aviation4All Declaration” in Athens in 2024 as a testament to the airport’s dedication to building a sustainable future.
Key achievements in 2024 included the iGA Academy hosting over 20,000 training sessions with high satisfaction rates, significant improvements in customer experience, and advancements in waste separation programs and water reuse initiatives.
Furthermore, iGA Istanbul Airport’s proactive approach to sustainability extends to its engagement with stakeholders and the community. The airport’s holistic approach aims to reduce its carbon footprint, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute to the well-being of employees and local communities.
As the aviation industry continues to prioritize sustainability, iGA Istanbul Airport’s efforts serve as a model for other airports worldwide. By setting ambitious goals, implementing innovative solutions, and fostering collaboration, the airport is shaping the future of sustainable aviation practices.
Looking ahead, iGA Istanbul Airport remains committed to driving sustainability forward, with a clear vision to achieve Net Zero Emissions and lead the industry in adopting environmentally friendly practices.
