Giorgio Buffa has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ancona International Airport (AIA), marking a significant milestone in the airport’s growth and modernization. Buffa brings over two decades of experience in the aviation industry, having held senior operational roles at various airports and airlines, including Hamad International Airport in Doha.
Buffa’s appointment comes at a crucial time for AIA, as the airport looks to expand its operations and enhance its infrastructure through ambitious projects and strategic industry partnerships. His proven track record in aviation leadership, particularly during challenging periods like the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores his ability to drive operational excellence and innovation.
Prior to joining AIA, Buffa served as the Senior Operations Manager at Hamad International Airport, where he played a key role in overseeing critical operations and contributed to the airport’s recognition as the “World’s Best Airport” by Skytrax. His extensive background in airline operations, including experience as a pilot, provides him with a comprehensive understanding of the technical and operational aspects of air travel.
Buffa takes over from Alex D’Orsogna, who transitioned to the role of General Director of ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority. D’Orsogna’s tenure saw significant growth at AIA, with notable developments in passenger and freight operations, as well as infrastructure enhancements that solidified the airport’s position in Italy’s transportation network.
Under Buffa’s leadership, AIA is embarking on a strategic transformation that includes the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, a Spaceport for suborbital flights, and a vertiport for Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft. These projects align with AIA’s vision to position itself as a forward-looking airport that integrates innovative technologies into its operations.
One of the key partnerships driving AIA’s growth is with Amazon, which is set to open a logistics hub near the airport. This hub, expected to be one of the largest in Europe, will significantly boost cargo volume and economic activity in the region, further enhancing AIA’s role as a critical player in air transportation and logistics.
The expansion of AIA not only supports increased air traffic but also meets the rising demand for airfreight services, positioning the airport as a vital hub for the aviation industry. The development of the MRO facility underscores AIA’s commitment to serving as a maintenance center for aircraft, further enhancing its strategic importance in Italy’s transportation sector.
Buffa’s leadership will be instrumental in navigating the challenges and opportunities facing the aviation industry, including sustainability goals, regulatory changes, and the adoption of new travel solutions. His expertise in sustainable development and operational efficiency will be crucial as AIA progresses towards achieving its long-term strategic objectives.
As Ancona International Airport looks towards the future, Buffa’s appointment signals a new chapter of growth and innovation for the airport. With a focus on expanding services, infrastructure, and embracing new technologies, AIA is poised to strengthen its position as a leading aviation and logistics hub in Italy and beyond.
