When it comes to travel, sometimes the best experiences come from stepping out of your comfort zone. For me, that meant swapping city life for a farm adventure with my family over Christmas. As someone who struggles with gardening, the idea of Airbnb-ing a farm was definitely a departure from my usual holiday plans. But with plenty of Airbnb stays under my belt, I was ready for the challenge.
The farm we booked was located in the picturesque rolling hills of Gloucester, a few hours north of Sydney. With 123 acres to explore, it was a far cry from my usual urban surroundings. The area held a special place in our hearts, as we used to vacation there when the kids were younger. Booking a farm stay turned out to be surprisingly similar to booking a city apartment, with the added bonus of instructions on how to interact with the resident cows.
Arriving a couple of days before Christmas, we were greeted by a charming 19th-century farmhouse perched atop a hill, offering breathtaking views in every direction. The sounds of cows mooing and birds chirping filled the air, creating a serene backdrop for our holiday festivities. Eager to fully immerse myself in farm life, I ditched my sneakers for more rugged footwear, armed myself with a bag of oranges (a favorite treat for the cows), and set out to meet the livestock.
Approaching the cows with a friendly gesture, I soon realized that my attempts at bonding were met with indifference. The cows seemed uninterested in my offerings and quickly retreated to a safe distance. Undeterred, I tried to lure them back with more oranges, only to watch them scamper away even faster. It was then that I noticed a giant Highland bull among the cows, a clear sign that something was amiss.
Concerned about the bull's presence among the cows, I quickly contacted our host to address the situation. Thankfully, I was reassured that the bull was housed with steers, neutered male cows, and posed no threat of impregnating the females. Crisis averted, we were able to enjoy a peaceful Christmas on the farm, surrounded by nature and new friends.
As the sun rose on Christmas morning, I was jolted awake by a loud crash against the verandah door. Startled, I rushed to investigate, only to find a curious crow attempting to gain entry into the house. Wondering at the bird's persistence, I couldn't help but marvel at the unexpected encounters that come with farm life.
Despite my initial hesitations, our farm stay turned out to be a memorable and eye-opening experience. From navigating interactions with livestock to embracing the tranquility of rural living, every moment offered a new perspective on the joys of travel. As I reflect on our holiday adventure, I can't help but appreciate the beauty of stepping outside my comfort zone and discovering the unexpected charms of farm life.
