APM Terminals has strengthened its collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to expedite the migration to the B’Odogwu platform at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa. This initiative aims to streamline trade processes and enhance cargo clearance efficiency. The B’Odogwu platform represents a significant technological upgrade from the previous system, NICIS II, offering a more advanced and transparent approach to port operations.
Despite the benefits of the new system, the migration process has posed challenges for various stakeholders in the logistics and freight forwarding sectors. In response to feedback from customers experiencing difficulties during the transition, APM Terminals Apapa partnered with the NCS to conduct a specialized training session for consignees and clearing agents in Lagos. The training aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the updated customs framework.
During the training event, Olayinka Akinlade, the Head of Government Relations at APM Terminals Apapa, highlighted a decline in cleared cargo volumes following the migration to B’Odogwu. To address these issues, APM Terminals introduced the APM Terminals–Customs B’Odogwu Clinic, a dedicated support center offering real-time assistance with documentation, shipment processing, and platform navigation. This clinic is designed to enhance transparency, expedite issue resolution, and ensure seamless daily operations.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Aondona Fanyam, acknowledged the initial challenges encountered during the rollout of the new system, such as visibility of bank payments and procedural complexities. Fanyam reassured stakeholders that Customs is actively working to resolve these issues and remains committed to engaging with industry players to ensure a smooth transition.
Industry experts have commended the proactive approach taken by APM Terminals and the NCS in addressing the challenges associated with the migration. Dr. Ikenna Nwosu, Deputy Chairman of the Clearing and Forwarding Trade Group at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), praised the collaborative efforts and expressed confidence in overcoming the initial hurdles.
Reflecting on the training session, Godstime Ifenudo, Logistics Manager at Raine Industries Limited, emphasized the clarity and resolution of uncertainties provided by the seminar. Similarly, Uche Michael, Logistics Supervisor for GAC Motors, lauded the transparency and responsiveness demonstrated during the discussions, stating that the dialogue instilled confidence in the system’s future improvement.
Overall, stakeholders in the freight and logistics industry are optimistic about the potential benefits of the B’Odogwu platform once the migration challenges are overcome.
