Ontario International Airport in Southern California has experienced a notable growth streak, with August showcasing gains in both passenger numbers and cargo volumes. This positive trend marks an extension of the airport’s ongoing increase in passenger traffic for 54 consecutive months and air cargo for 14 months.
During August, the airport welcomed a total of 646,820 passengers, indicating a 0.5% rise compared to the same period the previous year. Of these travelers, 592,870 were domestic passengers, while 53,950 were international visitors. Notably, international travel surged by 53.7% year-over-year, largely attributed to new flight routes to Mexico and Taiwan introduced earlier in the season.
Starlux Airlines, a Taiwan-based carrier, initiated direct service between Ontario and Taipei in June, setting a new record for international travelers that month. Following suit, Volaris, a Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier, launched multiple new flights between San Bernardino County and various Mexican destinations in July, further boosting international travel numbers.
From January to August, Ontario Airport served over 4.6 million passengers, marking a 1% increase from the same period in the previous year. International traffic witnessed a substantial rise of 14.2%, totaling nearly 349,000 passengers, while domestic travel remained steady. The top five airlines operating out of the airport in August were Southwest Airlines, American, Frontier, United, and Delta.
Not only did passenger traffic see an uptick, but cargo operations also contributed significantly to the airport’s growth trajectory. In August, Ontario Airport handled more than 69,000 tons of cargo, reflecting a nearly 1% increase from the previous year. Notably, while freight volume experienced a slight decline, mail shipments saw a remarkable surge of 116%. Overall cargo tonnage through August reached nearly 540,000 tons, a 9.2% increase from the same period in 2024.
The airport’s CEO, Atif Elkadi, attributed the continued growth in both passenger and cargo traffic to the resilience of aviation and shipping partners, the appeal of top-notch facilities and services, and the trust of the Southern California communities. Additionally, Ontario Airport achieved a new customer satisfaction milestone by securing the second position in the latest J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study for medium-sized airports.
Furthermore, the U.S. Postal Service’s recent contract with UPS for mail handling has positively impacted cargo numbers at Ontario Airport. The collaboration with UPS, which operates a significant cargo hub at the airport, has bolstered mail shipments and contributed to the overall growth in cargo operations.
As the airport continues on its growth trajectory, the positive trends in both passenger and cargo traffic highlight its significance as a key transportation hub in Southern California, catering to the needs of diverse travelers and shippers alike.
